Space Is The Place

Jazz icon Sun Ra said it best, 'Space Is The Place'. We can change it
and say 'The Practice Space Is The Place'.

What does your practice space look like? Is it the top of the dining room table,
a corner of the basement or attic, or do you have a space to call your own?

Believe it or not, having a dedicated practice space that is yours
and yours alone can do wonders for your motivation towards practicing.

Many people are cramped for space and I realize this but there is
always someplace to set up your music stand. The dining room table
works for some but the downside to that is you have to pack
up when it's time to set the table. Instead, find a corner of the
house in a little used room and set up shop there. You only
need enough real estate for a chair, music stand and a small table.

If you are one of the one's banished to the basement, rejoice!
You get to play as loud as you want!
The same goes for you. Find a dry corner, clean it up a bit
and set up shop. Note to the basement users, unless your
basement is nice and dry, I would recommend taking your
instrument upstairs into the house when you are finished
with your practice session.

You will notice that in addition to the chair and music stand I
included a small table in the required furniture. This is to
place your metronome (more on that another day), tape
recorder, tuner, picks and any other item you need
for the job such as your copy of the Steel Player's TAB Notebook:
The table doesn't have to be fancy, just enough
to get by. In fact mine is 12 inches square with a drawer which
is also handy to have.

When you get your practice space together, get busy and use it!
If you don't, before long it will get used by someone else with
more important things to do like pile laundry on your chair and stand.
