Smash Down Some Walls
Recently, a friend of mine told me a story of how he showed up at a
bluegrass picking jam with his cornet.
I instantly got a big wide grin on my face because this is the kind of story I
love to hear.
Rich walked in, removed the layers of coat, scarf and hat
we have to wear here in PA to endure the seemingly 6 month winters,
opened up his funny lookin’ cornet case, pulled out his horn and buzzed on
the mouthpiece in front of the wide eyed crowd who thought he was from some
other planet and it ain’t planet bluegrass!
He gently inserted the mouthpiece into
his horn and when it was his turn to play ripped off a dazzling bluegrass cornet
solo on Wabash Cannonball! Unfortunately his virtuosity was lost on the rest
of the pickers and he was escorted on out to Parchman Farm by the bluegrass police!
I know exactly what he went through because growing up as a French horn player
who wanted to play jazz, well in the words I heard most often, “the horn isn’t a jazz
instrument son.” Not being one to always listen to the voice of authority,
I didn’t give up and kept on showing up to the big band rehearsals.
Eventually the director relented because I wouldn’t go away and they
gave me a trombone part to play on my
French horn…I won!
So what does all this have to do with playing the dobro?
Everything
Like the Cornet and French horn, the Dobro is one of those instruments that
because the general crowd doesn’t understand, they sometimes put up
brick walls in front of us.
It is our job to smash them down and pulverize them into a fine dust!
To do this you have to spend some time learning your instrument
in a patient, methodical manner. The most important thing is to have a great
teacher who understands you and your instrument as well as great materials
to learn from. One of the finest books available for Dobro players is
Teach Yourself To Play Dobro available here:
In this 96 page book I lead you along on your journey from the moment
you open the case through playing your first licks, scales and songs. In
addition, I also include a 60 minute CD where I play all the examples in the
book slowly so you can play along. And the best thing is you aren’t
limited to bluegrass as I show you how to play a mean blues as well!
So in the words of Mick Jagger,
“It’s only rock and roll but I like it!”
Jam on,
Joe Stoebenau
