| Dear friend, Every once in a
while I come across a book, DVD or other Dobro related product that I just
have to share with everyone.
This DVD "Remembering Oswald" is such a product.
Pete Kirby otherwise known to the world as Bashful Brother Oswald was a
member of Roy Acuff's band The Smokey Mountain Boys from 1939 until
Acuff's death in 1992. (To learn the real story of how he got the name
"Bashful Brother Oswald" look at page 58 of
"The
Dobroist's Scrapbook")
"Os" went on to become one of the most influential Dobro players of all
time. Known for his bib overalls with watch chain hanging from the front
pocket, big floppy hat and heavy work boots, he created an instantly
recognizable persona.
With his trusty 1929 Dobro he got in a trade with Shot Jackson back in
the 1950's, he went on to play the Opry until Acuff died and after that,
he continued playing with Charlie Collins finally becoming an
official member of the Opry in January, 1995.

This DVD features the playing of 3 fantastic musicians: Charlie Collins
who was a member of Roy Acuff's Smokey Mountain Boys from 1966 until 1992. He
played often with Oswald as a duo known as Brother Oswald and Charlie.
Mike Webb, is the perfect person to carry the torch Oswald lit way back
in 1938. He became close friends with Os in the later years and has kept
true to Oswald's style of playing. At Brother Oswald's urging, Mike has
kept the flame alive by performing many of the old songs and skits with
Charlie Collins on Oswald's famous old Dobro and banjo.
The songs that are featured on this DVD include:
- Wabash Cannonball
- Last Letter
- When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again
- Cripple Creek
- End Of The World
- Great Speckled Bird
- Precious Jewel
- I'll Be All Smiles Tonight
- Columbus Stockade Blues
- Sailing Along
- Things That Might Have Been
- What A Friend We Have In Jesus
In addition to the great music, there are many close up shots of Mike
and Bev's hands for you Dobro players interested in learning some licks.
Bev King who also had close ties with Os also does some fantastic
playing on this production adding many subtle nuances that are perfect for
highlighting Mike's authentic playing. I have a feeling Brother Oswald was
there looking over everyone's shoulders and smiling.
