Quiz for the day:
When at a jam session or picking circle and it is your turn
to take a solo do you:
and hope someone else takes it.
When the subject of improvisation comes up most people
run for the hills manically waving their hands in the air
screaming “no more scales!!”
Unfortunately, scales are the way improvisation is taught.
You can run scales up and down all day long till the cows come home
but what can you do with them?
Break your solo up into short phrases and a healthy dose of breathing space.
This not only makes it easier for you to play a nice smooth solo but
makes it more interesting for the listener as well.
Sometimes playing 4 notes is all it takes. Then play the 4 notes again but change one note.
Put in a rhythmic context, you’ll be sounding like a seasoned pro in minutes!
