Quiz For The Day

Quiz for the day:

When at a jam session or picking circle  and it is your turn

to take a solo do you:

  1. seize the opportunity by the throat ,  or

  1. look at your shoes and pretend you didn’t know it was your turn

and hope someone else takes it.

When the subject of improvisation comes up most people

run for the hills manically waving their hands in the air

screaming “no more scales!!”

Unfortunately, scales are the way improvisation is taught.

You can run scales up and down all day long till the cows come home

but what can you do with them?

Break your solo up into short phrases and a healthy dose of breathing space.

This not only makes it easier for you to play a nice smooth solo but

makes it more interesting for the listener as well.

Sometimes playing 4 notes is all it takes. Then play the 4 notes again but change one note.

Put in a rhythmic context, you’ll be sounding like a seasoned pro in minutes!

This technique is described in detail on page 61 of
