Play With The Masters Of Music

How do you get a guitar player to play softer?

Put music in front of them!

That's an old joke but it sure is true. The biggest hurdle
most guitarist's run into is reading music. For most it really
doesn't matter not being able to read but to me that would
be like only learning to speak a language without being able
to read any newspapers, books, signs or anything else that
requires reading. It would be tough just to get through the day.

Well, fortunately learning the language of music is fairly easy
once you have a few basic principals down such as the seven basic
notes of the major scale and how to count to four. You can learn
11 simple items can't you?

Let's start with rhythm. In most music that we play and hear
the rhythm is made up of a steady pulse. Sort of like a
conveyer belt it keeps chugging along. Let's give the pulse
some numbers to reference it by: one, two, three, four, one,
two, three, four, one, two, three, four, etc.

See? it just keeps on repeating over and over until the song is finished.

Next let's look at some notes to play. Very simply they are the same
notes as the white keys on the piano: C, D, E, F, G, A, B and then C.

Here's an exercise: find C on your instrument and play it while
counting to four in a slow, even pulse over and over. Keep the pulse
going and play D then E and so on. Do this and you are off to
a great beginning!

The next thing to do is learn to recognize the notes on paper.
Grab your copy of one of my best selling books Teach Yourself to
Play Dobro
or Teach Yourself To Play pedal Steel Guitar...
what, you don't have a copy? You better click on one of the above links immediately!

Both of these books show you how to read and play music
simply, painlessly and most of all make it an enjoyable experience.
Before you know it you'll be reading and playing like a pro!

Reading music is the key to becoming a well rounded musician able
to take full advantage of all the resources available to you. Just think,
if you read music, you will have centuries of great material to play!

You never know, Mozart and Bach might sound pretty good on Dobro
and pedal steel! Actually I happen to know that Bach sounds good
because I have been practicing the first Bach cello suite on my Dobro!
