As I was teaching music lessons last evening, I was struck at how many excuses I heard for not putting in the practice time on their instrument.
"I had soccer practice"..."I had to set the table"...and my personal favorite, I can't make noise after 7:00PM"!, etc.
Before I go on, let me digress a bit. Whenever a new music student comes to me for lessons I always ask two questions...
1. Why do you want to play music?
2. Why do you want to play that particular instrument?
Usually the answer varies from "I don't know" (the most common) to "my mom told me to" and sometimes I just get a blank stare!
Occasionally someone comes along and has a good answer..."I want to play guitar because I like Jimi Hendrix" (insert your favorite guitar player). They say it with conviction and that excites me because I know they will be a great student. Teaching them will be a joy!
After a few weeks I start to notice the student showing up late and unprepared. What do you think their answer is when I ask what is going on?
If you have read any of my articles elsewhere, then you know the answer...Not enough time!
They got so wrapped up in school activities, homework, television, surfing the internet and the phone that there just wasn't any time to practice!
You see, it sneaks up on us. Just when we thought things were going well...KABAAM!
We get run over by the semi-truck we call our lives.
We need to get back on track and remember why we wanted to play music in the first place.
If not now, then when?
