"It's A Question Of Tone"
It’s a question of tone.
I was talking with a few Dobro players recently and the subject of “Tone” came up.
a conversation about tone is a lot like talking about politics in that everybody’s opinion
is the right one and only one.
Some people prefer the sound of the prewar stamped cones and others like the newer style
spun cones. (if you don’t know what a Dobro “cone” is, click the link below).
Solid wood, metal body, laminated wood, bronze strings, nickel strings, and on and on!
What do I think is the ultimate tone? I’ll let you know in a minute.
The point is we live in a time of abundance. We can walk into a music store and find dozens of
instruments in every color, shape and material under the sun. How great is that!
So, because I can have an instrument put together to my exact specifications, I prefer to have several
because I feel that each instrument has it’s own “voice” and it takes a choir of different voices to play
different songs and styles demanded by today's music.
Recently I uncovered a fantastic book that has been around since the mid 1970’s. The Dobroist’s Scrapbook
by Bev King is one of those books you will refer back to time and time again. I was just looking at my copy this evening
and time flew by as I was transported back in time looking at all the old guitar advertisements.
