 How Does Your BBQ Taste?

How many times have you gone to a BBQ and the burgers or steak

were dried out and burnt to a crisp? You take a bite and the meal

you waited all day for tastes like shoe leather or crumbles

into dust before your very eyes,

Myself?

I’m not afraid to say it.

I’m a Master Griller!

First I get the grill good and hot for a while

and then I gently lay the steaks across the cooking

grate and turn down the heat to the lowest setting.

Huh?

Turn down the heat and while it takes a lot longer

and you miss out on the flames and pyrotechnics,

you end up with a juicy steak that cooked from the

inside out instead of a charred carcass with a cold

red inside.

So the way I see it, practicing music is a lot like

grilling up a good steak.

So many times we approach a piece of music and attempt

to barnstorm our way through it without taking the time to

check for dangerous curves or other things that might derail us.

A fantastic exercise is to go through the melody of an etude or song

and figure out the scales and chords that the melody is outlining.

This does three very important things:

  1. It trains your eyes and brain to recognize groups of notes and their
  2. overall shape instead of focusing on individual notes.

  3. Chord and scale recognition grows to the point that you can
  4. anticipate where the song is going to go next.

  5. Sight reading ability is dramatically improved in that you begin to

See entire lines of notes in one large grouping.

Like the steak cooking on the grill above, this takes time.

The best way to go about it is to slow down and take the music line by line.

When you have figured out the scales and chords, get out your

instrument and begin to play closely listening to the sound of

each scale and chord.
