Guess Where I Am

There’s a warm tropical rain coming down outside so I

thought this might be a good time to write a message.

This morning I took a drive out to Point Udall and as I stood

on the edge of the bluff overlooking the ocean I reflected

on the fact I was the eastern most person in the United States.

Yep, no one in the country was further east than me.

How is this possible? I’ll get to that in a minute.

Judging by the amount of emails I received yesterday I think

I hit on something important. What it comes down to is that

music is a language and we should all have an open mind.

This past week has been an amazing experience for me. I have

been immersed in a melting pot of languages and music.

Most of the music has been reggae and while I never really listened

to it in the past I heard it a lot this week and as I began to listen to it…

really listen to the rhythmic nuances and where each instrument has it’s

place in the overall sound I got all kinds of ideas of how I can

incorporate this into my musical briefcase.

Believe it or not, there is a place for a Dobro in the music of the islands!

Ok, so this past week I have been in St Croix, US Virgin Islands. It has been

A fantastic time of slowing down and enjoying the sun and warm weather.

Strolling around and observing a slower pace and hearing music from every

Corner from rap to reggae and even jazz.  No country but I’m sure it is here.

The language is for the most part English but with a very

musical melody and rhythm. Not to mention that everyone

seems to be very friendly and most people have a kind word when

you pass on the sidewalk. Way different from the Northeast!

When I do return home in a few days, I’ll take a piece of the culture with me

In the form of   the music.

So keep your ears open because your next musical

inspiration might come from somewhere other than a song.

Now if I can come up with a way to blen the music of Bill Monroe

with Bob Marley. The album cover could have a picture of

 Bill with dreadlocks!

Don’t play it any faster than you can play perfectly!

Joe Stoebenau

P.S. I went the whole message without a plug so please

head on over to my site and order your copy of the DVD/book set
