Goals Change

Have you noticed that maybe the goals you set for yourself some time ago might not be relevant to your life today? This is a common occurrence.
So often we set long term goals for ourselves and then wonder why we never get any closer to achieving them. At the time we set the goal we probably had a clear vision of where we wanted to be in the future but then the path getting there changed.

The goal is simply a destination. Like traveling from one place to another, there are multiple routes to get there. Some routes are scenic and take longer and other routes are freeways and get you there in a hurry. Getting to your goal in a hurry is not always the best path to take. Sometimes we need to take the slower, scenic path to really get a clearer vision of where we are headed. Much like traveling over a mountain and descending into the valley below where you can see the whole town laid out before you. It is this scenic path that exposes you to different influences and environments and helps you shape what you want or expect out of your goal.

If you are like most people, your goals change over time. This can be caused by subtle and some not so subtle changes in your life and the path you are on. It's a good idea to stop for a minute and take an inventory of your goals. It's ok to decide that a goal you made a year ago is no longer relevant or maybe not a priority. Simply eliminate it or send it to the back burner but be sure to replace it with a new goal that is relevant to your current life. In a few months, have another inventory and see if you are any closer to achieving it. Be careful that you don't eliminate it because you didn't take the steps needed to achieve it. If this is the case, then maybe setting a few smaller goals are the way to reach the larger one.

So start with some small, easy to attain goals to flex your muscles and work up to the larger ones. Always have some long term goals and choose which way you want to go. If the super highway doesn't work then maybe the scenic road is the way to go gathering up life experiences as you proceed on your way.
