Do Try This At Home
One of the coolest things about playing the guitar is that there are so many ways to play it.
Right handed, left handed, upside down strung, slide, open tuning, 6, 7, or even 10 string, lap style, and on and on!
What this means is that we as guitar players should be open minded and try some other technique of playing once in a while.
Let’s take lap style guitar playing for example. This has got to be one of the easiest and most satisfying ways to play the guitar since
Joseph Kekuku dropped a pocketknife across the strings of his guitar in 1889 and invented lap style guitar.
(the complete story can be found in the Dobroist’s Scrapbook http://www.steelguitarzone.com/dobroists_scrapbook.htm )
Don’t have a Dobro lying around? No Problem!
Most guitar players have an old acoustic guitar hanging around that doesn’t get used much.
Cheap guitars with warped necks and high string action work great for this!
Simply tune your guitar to an open chord such as open G (from low to high G B D G B D).
Next lay the guitar across your lap and put your slide to the strings and start having fun!
Try different tunings such as open A and open E. You’ll find each tuning has it’s own special voice.
Once you figure out a few licks, it’s time to move on and really have some fun. Pick up your copy
of Teach Yourself To Play Dobro
and you will sound like a pro your first day using this revolutionary 96 page book and CD combo.
The best thing is that any guitar played lap style will work with this book so fear not and run on over and get your now!
